Crytek Announced The Climb for the Oculus Rift

Virtual Reality could be the future of gaming, even though it has been around since the ’90s. VR headsets have never really taken off as of yet, but both Sony and Oculus VR have unveiled new virtual reality platforms for next year with the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift. A variety of game publishers are confirming new games for the upcoming VR platforms, among which is Crytek who has just announced The Climb for Oculus Rift.

The Climb could be the first virtual reality climbing game. This is a game that is going to bring the thrills of rock climbing to the Oculus Rift. As you might expect from a VR game, it is in the first-person with players moving a pair of hands around to climb the cliffs.

This game will include realistic climbing locations and stunning 3D landscapes for players to climb along. Crytek has confirmed that one of the locations will be in Asia. The publisher showcased a trailer that includes a cliff-side landscape with plenty of vegetation beside sandy beaches and the sea. The Crytek president, Yerli, stated:

Gaming has always given us the opportunity to place ourselves in otherwise impossible scenarios, and VR technology such as the Rift makes us feel present in those scenarios like never before. The Climb invites players to experience the intensity of one of the world’s most dangerous sports, and they’ll truly feel the thrill of being thousands of meters above the ground with nothing but their skill and a few precarious handholds to rely on.

The game is based on Crytek’s latest CRYENGINE game engine. Mr Rubin, head of Oculus WorldWide Studios, stated:

Crytek is renowned for leveraging their CRYENGINE tech to create beautiful, immersive games. Their early VR demos really captured public imagination, and to see their ideas come to life with Rift is incredible and not to be missed. The Climb is a beautiful combination of art and thrill that’s bringing an entirely new level of adventure gaming to Rift.

This game is supported by both the Xbox One and Oculus Touch controllers. Crytek has confirmed some system specifications for The Climb. They are as follows:

CPU: Intel i5-4590
Platform: Windows 7 SP1

Crytek has not announced any official launch date for the game yet. You can find further details about The Climb on its website. The game is certainly something original, and could be among the more exciting titles on the Oculus Rift.
