Most Expensive Car in Europe Sold

The most expensive car in Europe has been sold, at auction. At one point it could have been the most expensive car ever sold in the world, but a shifting exchange rate between the euro and the dollar has put paid to that.

As to the car, it is a 1957 Ferrari – a red 335 Sport Scaglietti. the car was sold on Friday, February 5 2016, at the the Retromobile auction in Paris. The sum paid was 32 million euros.

The high price tag reflects the car’s history. It took part in the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix (at a time when the island ruled by a different dictator to today), and it was driven by many famous people from the world of motor sport, including the British driver Stirling Moss. The car also set a lap record at the Le Mans 24 Hours race.

The car was sold by Pierre Bardinon, who purchased the vehicle in 1970. The new owner has not been named. There is one snag with the purchase: the owner will be able to look at the vehicle but not drive it; designed as a racing car, the car cannot be used legally on any roads.

The world record for a car, in terms of the amount paid for it, remains at $38.1 million. This was the price paid for a Ferrari GTO at an auction in the U.S. in August 2014.
