Miss Mueller who was 26, was first working in her home state of Arizona at a women’s shelter and an HIV/AIDS clinic before going to Turkey to help the Syrian refugees. She was taken hostage in 2013 after leaving a hospital in Syria. ISIL had claimed she was killed recently but until now there was no confirmation of this. A White House spokeswoman said Miss Mueller’s death was confirmed after her captors contacted her family over the weekend, Bernadette Meehan of the National Security Council said: “Over the weekend, the family received a private message from Kayla’s ISIL captors containing additional information.”

Neither her family or the president wanted to give out any circumstance surrounding the death of the last-known American hostage that was held by ISIL. The president went on in his statement saying: “No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla’s captivity and death.”

The family of Kayla Mueller stated that they were heartbroken and went on to release a letter that she sent to them in 2014 while she was being held hostage.

Chuck Hagel, the US defence secretary, said: “The world is united in condemning Isil’s continued murder and imprisonment of innocents.”
